A bunion forms when the big toe begins to deviate toward the other toes, often linked to shoes that are too narrow across the front of the foot. As the toes are squeezed together, the first metatarsal can drift outward while the big toe angles inward, creating the familiar bony prominence at the base of the big toe.
Barefoot shoes support a more natural toe alignment. Their wide, anatomically shaped toe boxes allow the toes to spread apart, reducing pressure on the bunion and encouraging healthier mechanics during walking.
Depending on severity and how early they're addressed, bunions can often improve through footwear changes alone. Many people find that gradually switching to barefoot shoes reduces pain and inflammation. Targeted exercises to strengthen the muscles of the toes and arches can also help stabilize the big toe joint and maintain long-term change.
