Flat feet — or low arches — are very common and are not the issue in themselves. For many people, the appearance of a low arch is simply part of their natural anatomy. For others, arch flattening can be linked to a lack of strength and mobility in the muscles that support the big toe, midfoot and ankle.
Barefoot shoes encourage these supporting muscles to become more active. The flexible sole allows the foot to move and respond to the ground, helping to rebuild strength in the deep stabilising muscles that contribute to arch support.
People with flatter feet are often well suited to barefoot footwear, provided they transition at a comfortable pace. Start with shorter periods of wear and pay attention to how your feet feel. Complementary exercises such as short barefoot walks, towel scrunches, calf mobility and gentle balance drills can offer additional support.
